A charming small Kutani vessel painted with a traditional Japanese landscape, featuring a pavilion nestled among pine trees, rocks and winding water.

The rounded body is decorated in rich shades of cobalt blue, yellow, green and soft aubergine, with expressive black outlines defining the architecture and landscape. The softly crackled white ground and spontaneous brushwork give the piece a wonderful sense of age and individuality.

The base bears a hand-painted Kakufuku (角福) mark, a traditional auspicious mark found on Kutani ware.

Originally made as a small oil jar, its compact, rounded form makes it equally appealing today as a decorative vessel or simply as a small piece of Japanese ceramic history to live with.

A delightful example of early 20th-century Kutani, where everyday objects could also become miniature painted landscapes.
